Toddler Escapes Daycare, Ends Up In The Middle Of Busy Street On A Tricycle

A daycare center owner in Ohio is facing charges after a two-year-old child escaped and was found riding in the middle of a busy street on a tricycle. Authorities said it was the fourth child in the last five years that managed to escape from the center.

The young boy was found by Officer David West of the Sandusky Police Department. He was freezing cold and soaking wet and was unable to tell West who he was or where he was from.

"I really couldn't believe it, especially that time of the day and the temperature, barely dressed, just walking on this little scooter in the middle of the street," West said.

Officers started going to door-to-door to try to find out where the toddler was from. They managed to find the daycare center that was supposed to be watching over the boy and found six other children at the house.

They did a quick inspection of the facility and discovered that while the front door was secured with a deadbolt, it was within reach of the young children.

"We tried to explain to [the daycare employee] maybe some childproofing, doorknob covers," said West. "If she's watching more than one kid, maybe get an alarm or something on the door, so if the door opens, there is a beeping sound."

The owner was taken into custody and charged with endangering children. She pleaded not guilty and faces up to one year behind bars if convicted.
